Umrah is a beautiful act of worship and a sacred journey that allows Muslims to seek forgiveness, purification, and closeness to Allah. Unlike Hajj, Umrah can be performed at any time of the year, making it accessible for believers who wish to renew their faith and strengthen their spiritual connection. Every step of Umrah carries deep meaning and reward when performed with sincerity and devotion.
Ihram at Miqat:
The journey of Umrah begins at the Miqat, the designated point where pilgrims enter the state of Ihram. Before reaching Miqat, it is recommended to purify yourself by taking a bath, trimming your nails, and removing unwanted hair as an act of physical and spiritual cleanliness.
Men wear two simple unstitched white sheets, symbolizing equality, humility, and unity before Allah. Women wear modest clothing that fully covers the body, maintaining simplicity and dignity.
After wearing Ihram, pray two Rak‘ah of Nafl and make the sincere intention (Niyyah) for Umrah. Begin reciting the Talbiyah:
“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik…”
(Here I am, O Allah, here I am.)
The Talbiyah is a declaration of submission and devotion, reminding the pilgrim that they are answering Allah’s call.
Tawaf in Makkah:
Upon arriving in Makkah, enter Masjid al-Haram with humility, gratitude, and respect. The sight of the Ka‘bah is deeply emotional for many pilgrims, and it is recommended to engage in Du‘a upon first seeing it.
Tawaf involves circling the Ka‘bah seven times in an anti-clockwise direction, starting from the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad), while keeping the Ka‘bah on your left. Each round represents obedience, unity, and remembrance of Allah.
After completing Tawaf, offer two Rak‘ah of prayer near Maqam Ibrahim, if possible, and drink Zamzam water with gratitude and Du‘a, as it is a blessed source of healing and mercy.
Sa’ee Between Safa and Marwah:
Sa’ee commemorates the devotion and struggle of Hajar (RA) in her search for water for her son Ismail (AS). Begin Sa’ee at Safa Hill by facing the Ka‘bah and making Du‘a.
Walk seven times between Safa and Marwah, remembering Allah and making personal supplications. One round is counted from Safa to Marwah. Men are encouraged to jog lightly between the green lights, while women continue walking at a normal pace.
This act symbolizes patience, trust in Allah, and unwavering faith during hardship.
Shaving or Trimming Hair:
The final step of Umrah is shaving or trimming the hair. Men are encouraged to shave their heads completely (Halaq) for greater reward, though trimming the hair short (Taqsir) is also permissible. Women should cut a small lock of hair, approximately one inch in length.
Once this step is completed, Umrah is complete, and the restrictions of Ihram are lifted. The pilgrim returns to normal life with a heart filled with peace, gratitude, and renewed faith.
